Shimla is a timeless hill station dotted with quaint colonial buildings
poised along its twelve kilometre ridge.
This tranquil hill station was a favourite of the Viceroy Lord Curzon, who not only designed India’s first 9-hole golf course here, but also named his third daughter Alexandra Naldehra after it. Nowadays, Naldehra, at 2,195 metres altitude, boasts a challenging golf course that is rated amongst the best in the country. For those more interested in trekking, Naldehra is also home to Shali Peak, whose hiking trail runs a steep 8 kms to the summit for beautiful views.
A fantastic example of colonial engineering. Water was transported from here to Shimla in what are believed to have been the first steam pumped pipes in India. Nowadays, this 12 square kilometre forest is abundant in Himalayan flora, fauna and still boasts an intricate network of rainwater streams.
Originally the residence of Lord Dufferin, Viceroy of India (1884–1888), the Viceregal Lodge peers over Shimla from its perch on Observatory Hill. Worth a visit, for many momentous decisions were made in this building, including the move to carve Pakistan from India in 1947.
